Rethinking the Response to Refugees in Jordan: Local Based Assistance, Urban Refugees, and Host Communities

The violence in Syria has created a massive and complex humanitarian crisis with more than half a million people fleeing to neighboring countries. The current situation is expected to continue and worsen, with more than 710,000 refugees expected by the end of the year throughout the region. USCRI traveled to the Syria/Jordan border in July and November 2012 to monitor the situation of refugees and make policy recommendations.

USCRI’s Key Findings and Recommendations:

  1. Keep an Open Border Policy
  2. Move away from a camp-based model
  3. Support local NGOs, host governments, and communities
  4. Address the needs of Iraqi refugees and Palestinians fleeing Syria
