Rym Ghazal, “Iraqi refugees in Lebanon: illegal and nowhere to go: 'At any moment we can be detained or deported,'” Daily Star, May 1, 2006 [excerpts]:

Fatima, an Iraqi refugee and mother of four who fled to Lebanon in 1996 … now resides in one of the Palestinian refugee camps; she says it was "the cheapest rent" she could find. ...

"We are illegally here, and at any moment we can get arrested by the Lebanese authorities for not having valid residency papers and be detained or deported," said Hala, another Iraqi refugee who works as a maid to support her family.

"I was a respected high school teacher back home. Here, I am constantly abused by my employers and have been turned into a fugitive because no country will take me," she said. …

"I don't know what the future of my children will be," said [one Iraqi] mother, who, along with other refugees, has been attending vocational courses at the UNHCR community center, "to feel human for a few hours."

"My children have no rights; My husband and I have no rights, and sadly, Iraqis never seem to have had any human rights," she said.
