Why Hire Refugees?

Skills: Refugees showcase a variety of employable skills.  Des Moines’s refugee community is composed of doctors, nurses, small business owners, farmers, construction workers, graphic designers, tailors, and more.  Most refugees speak several languages.  Some refugees hold Master's Degrees; others are expert farmers or gifted artisans.  If you're looking for a skilled employee, we can match you with a qualified refugee.

Strong Work Ethic, High Retention Rates: Refugees come to the United States with the purpose of regaining self-sufficiency and economic stability for their families.  Strengthened by their experiences, they make capable, resilient, and loyal employees.

Built-in Retention Support: USCRI Des Moines manages external factors so that employees can focus on work at work.  Our staff provides holistic services to refugees so that child care, transportation, and other peripheral factors are resolved before the job begins.

Positive Economic and Community Impact: Refugees are new Americans; they contribute to the local economy by spending locally, living locally, and paying taxes.  Hiring refugees promotes self-sufficiency, strengthening our families and community.  They are hard-working, loyal employees who will improve your bottom line, while improving their own lives.

Tax Incentives: Some businesses qualify for tax incentives when they hire resettled refugees.  For more information, visit the Iowa Department of Labor's website or contact your local DOL representative.

What is a refugee?
A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence.  Refugees differ from other immigrants in that they do not have the choice to remain in their home country.  Refugees flee their countries to save their lives.  The United States Government and partner agencies like USCRI Des Moines and our parent organization, the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, resettle refugees in cities all over the country with the goals of self-sufficiency and personal stability.

Many refugees are highly educated and multi-lingual.  All refugees have valuable skills that they bring to the workplace.  The Des Moines refugee community is composed of doctors, nurses, small business owners, farmers, construction workers, graphic designers, tailors, and more.
