Volunteer to Help Refugees in Our Community

Resettling refugees into the Detroit area involves the dedication and generosity of many people.  USCRI Detroit’s volunteers find themselves performing incredibly fulfilling tasks when they devote their time to our clients and our mission.  As a volunteer, you can play an integral part in the refugee resettlement process and help new arrivals to make a smooth transition into their new home.  Whether you can commit ten hours per week or ten hours per year, you will make a real difference in refugees’ lives.

We have a wide range of opportunities, depending on your skills, interests, and availability.  Our volunteers:

• Teach elementary and intermediate-level English language classes at the USCRI Detroit office
• Pick up and deliver donations 
• Sort donations and help with apartment set-up
• Teach informational classes to refugees and speak at workshops

In-Kind Donations

Your in-kind donations help refugees to start new lives on the right foot.  In-kind donations help furnish newly-arrived refugees’ homes and ensure that refugee children have necessary school supplies.  We accept gently used or new items only.  Please contact Asra Musaibli at (313) 581-4420 for questions about in-kind donations. 

Most needed:

• Beds (especially twin, double, full size)
• Couches (no pull-out beds) 
• Tables 
• Chairs 
• Dressers 
• Sheet sets 
• Blankets 
• Winter coats and boots 
• Gift cards to grocery stores & department stores

Refugees would also really like:

• Microwaves
• Toasters 
• Frying pans 
• Woks 
• Rice cookers

We cannot accept TVs, washing machines or dryers, stoves, decorative items, clothing (other than winter coats, boots and baby clothes), or books (other than children's books, books for English language learners, and dictionaries).

We receive donations of goods at our office Monday thru Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
